Sept. 10Pennsylvania Dutch Celebration: Schwarzwald Lutheran Church, 250 Church Lane Road, Reading, celebrates the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation Sept. 10. New Horizon Band performs in church pavilion 3 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther and his wife Katie (played by Pastor Newhart and Kathy Fegley) visit in church sanctuary at 4 p.m. to describe their lives during the Reformation. A Pennsylvania Dutch sing-a-long will follow. Beginning at 5:15 p.m., a Pennsylvania Dutch dinner featuring pot pie, brats and sauerkraut, chow chow, shoofly pie and many other dutch treats will be served, birch beer will be provided and beer will be available for purchase. Happy Dutchmen will provide dinner music. Tickets are $5 with children 9 and under free. Purchase tickets by Sept. 5. A “will call” option provided. Call 610-779-3480.

Sept. 11Constitution class: held at St. Paul’s UMC, 1136 Geigertown Road, Birdsboro. Starting Sept. 11, class will be held every Monday starting at 6 p.m. and will last 10 weeks. Open to the public. Sept. 11Flag Retirement Ceremony: The Leola Veterans’ Memorial and Troop 83, Boy Scouts of America will hold a flag retirement ceremony Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. Program includes lowering of a worn U.S. flag and raising of its replacement. The retired flag will be divided into its individual components, with a ceremonial reading by Boy Scouts from Troop 83. Following the ceremony, flags will be burned in a dignified manner. Collection boxes have been placed at various businesses in Leola for community members to place worn or tattered flags for ceremonial retirement. Places include Achenbach’s Bakery, Royer Pharmacy, Dollar General, Gracie’s On Main, Sharp Shopper, and the Zion Lutheran Church. The public is invited to attend. Sept. 11AARP 2-day Introduction to Driver Safety Course: Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave. in New Holland, Sept. 11 and 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Garden Towers, the 3rd floor classroom in the Apartment Suites. Garden Spot Village will also host AARP’s 1-day Refresher Course on Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Garden Towers. During the class, drivers ages 50+ will learn defensive driving techniques as well as skills necessary to operate vehicles more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. Participants may qualify to receive a discount upon completion of the course. Consult your insurance agent for details. Sept. 14Honey Brook Senior Citizens will meet: Sept. 14, at 11:45 a.m. in the Honey Brook Presbyterian Church. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish to share. The Tel Hai Ukulele Band will present a program and a sing-a-long. All area seniors are invited to attend and bring a friend.

Sept. 16STARFEST 2017: Saturday, Sept. 16, Rain/Cloud date Sept. 17 at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson, (off Route 345 at Hopewell Road) 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. Join the Chesmont Astronomical Society for speakers, astronomy presentations and activities for kids. Public viewing of Milky Way available through more than 20 amateur and high-end telescopes. The highlight of the evening is 10 Object Row. 10 of our members’ telescopes will be focused on a different deep sky object so the public gets a variety of astronomical objects to look at. Oct. 4Wednesday Community Night: celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation at Robeson Lutheran Church, 3520 Plow Road, Mohnton, 6 p.m. German meal followed at 6:30 by 1 hour program Luther 500 – A Layman’s Guide to the Protestant Reformation: What I Learned in Lutherland by Steve Seyfried, a Philadelphia actor and playwright with many years of theater experience. In 2014 Steve Seyfried traveled in the footsteps of Martin Luther. In this presentation, he relives the journey that led him to a new understanding of this extraordinary man and an appreciation for the massive effect Luther has had on the past 500 years.
