Black Friday fizzle: Shopping centers reduce hours for the holidays

Retailers like Valley West Mall and others have given up on the idea of being open all night before Black Friday, because it is no longer the biggest shopping day of the year. Trisha Barton, with Valley West Mall, said the frenzy surrounding the traditional start of the holiday shopping season is not what it once was. “The reason Black Friday has changed is because now everything is opening up earlier on Thursday,” Barton said. Valley West, Merle Hay, Southridge and Jordan Creek Town Center all open at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving night but are closing at midnight. The malls will reopen early Friday morning. So the days of a mad rush to grab the first door-busters are gone. Jordan Creek Town Center general manager Randy Tennison said shoppers’ attitudes about holiday shopping have changed. “It just didn't make sense to do that overnight thing anymore for the mall itself,” Tennison said. Tennison said online competition is a big factor and the goal at Jordan Creek is to deal with it. “You can't just fight against online,” Tennison said. “You can't. You can't pretend like it's not going to happen. You have to embrace it and integrate online with your brick-and-mortar (stores) and your brick-and-mortar (stores) with your online.” At Valley West Mall, Barton said stores are realizing the door-buster game is changing. “JC Penney and Younkers here do a really good job of bringing in a ton of those door-busters,” Barton said. “So that even if you're not the first person in line, but maybe the 100th, they still have those luggage sets or the comforter or those things that you're excited about coming to get.’ The busiest shopping days of the year are now the weekend before Christmas. Not all stores at the malls will be open Thursday night or early Friday morning. Shoppers are advised to check mall websites for details.
