On Wednesday, Sept. 13, at approximately 11:30 a.m., 80-year-old Flossie Blackshear, of Madison, was sent to the Madison County Memorial Hospital emergency room due to injuries she sustained after being struck by a vehicle in front of Winn-Dixie located at 729 W. Base St., in Madison.
Madison Police Department (MPD) Sergeant Tony Mashburn responded to a call received by dispatch at 11:23 a.m. He arrived on scene moments later and discovered that a 2000 Ford Ranger, driven by 63-year-old David Rygwalski, of Lee, struck Blackshear's shopping cart, which in turn threw her to the ground. Rygwalski was facing Winn-Dixie and turning east as Blackshear was pushing her cart across the crosswalk toward the parking lot. Rygwalski was cited for careless driving. It was raining at the time of the incident, and the roadway was wet. Alcohol was not involved.
In addition to the MPD, Madison Fire Rescue and Madison County EMS responded to the call.
