N. Korea discloses cosmetics factory to foreign media

All News 15:28 September 18, 2018

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Yonhap) -- North Korea has recently opened its cosmetics factory to China's media ahead of this week's inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang, apparently displaying its willingness to promote economic growth.

According to a report by China's Global Times on Tuesday, the newspaper's reporters were invited to visit the Pyongyang Cosmetics Factory in the North Korean capital on Sept. 8.

It is the first time that the North's authorities have disclosed its cosmetics factory to foreign media. The Pyongyang Cosmetics Factory, visited two times by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in 2015 and in 2017, is known to be among the North's backbone industrial facilities. The rare disclosure of the cosmetics plant is in line with the Pyongyang regime's ongoing campaign for economic development, watchers say.

The Global Times, a sister paper of the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, said in its report that the Pyongyang Cosmetics Factory's best-known brand of Unhasu and other products are manufactured in a tidy and quiet environment.

The Pyongyang Cosmetics Factory even publicized the quality comparison results between Unhasu and world-renowned brands, such as Shiseido and Chanel, seeking to display the superiority of its products, according to the Chinese newspaper.

A factory official told the paper that the North Korean cosmetics products will be shipped to Russia, Iran, Cyprus and Australia in the near future, adding it recently received an order from Russia.
