Minister Thulas Nxesi of Employment and Labour (DEL) has strongly warned South African companies against hiring undocumented foreigners.
Things toughen up for undocumented foreigners
DEL has given a stern warning to all South African companies should they employ foreigners who are undocumented they shall be fined.
This comes after a Zimbabwean nation Kudakwashe Mpofu, who was working as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in the North West Development Cooperation while illegally in the country, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
According to IOL Nxesi’s statement follows Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi’s call for stricter penalties on employers who knowingly employ undocumented foreigners, just a month ago.
Nxesi said that they were concerned about the increasing number of undocumented foreigners who are employed in the wholesale and retail sector.
DEL stated that it had to implement a three day Employment Services Act in North West province.
In a move signalling a firm stance against hiring undocumented foreigners, the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL), in collaboration with other law enforcement bodies, issued more than 50 contravention notices and compliance orders to non-compliant employers in Rustenburg, North West.
Additionally, 9 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested during the operation.
Undocumented foreigners escape from Lindela Repatriation Centre
The Department of Home Affairs confirmed the escape of the 70 undocumented foreigners who escaped from the Londela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp.
Reported by IOL Home Affairs stated that conflict between the security staff and immigrants lead to the escape.
Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, reacted to the infamous escape of immigrants who were due to be deported to their countries of origin, has indicated that his department is assessing a contract with facilities management company Enviromongz at the centre.
According to media reports the detainees who escaped while awaiting deportation hail from eight African countries, including Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Burundi, and Nigeria.
