A PROLIFIC shoplifter who attacked a police officer and ignored a shop ban three times has been jailed for almost two years.
Stefan Jaworski, 43, was hit by a criminal behaviour order in November 2022 with conditions not to enter any BP garage containing an Marks and Spencer store, as well as any Marks and Spencer store.
However, he ignored this ban three times in September last year as he attempted to steal from the BP garage in London Road, Rayleigh.
Jaworski, of Francis Walk, Rayleigh, was already put behind bars for a year in 2023 after pleading guilty to multiple theft offences and six counts of breach of a criminal behaviour order.
Following an investigation by Castle Point and Rochford's neighbourhood policing team, Jaworski appeared at Basildon Crown Court last Tuesday where was jailed for one year and 11 months after he admitted breaching a court order.
As well as admitting breaching the criminal behaviour order and two attempted shop thefts, he also admitted burglary and theft.
Jaworski had stolen £148.80 of goods from Rayleigh's Tesco Express store – assaulted a police officer as he was being arrested and, later in custody, failed to provide a sample for a Class A drugs test, which he is required to do under Essex Police’s drug test on arrest scheme.
Alongside the prison sentence, he was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £187.
Under the drug test on arrest scheme, detainees are required to take a saliva test for cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin if officers believe these drugs have contributed to the crime or if they have been arrested for acquisitive crimes, such as theft, burglary, robbery and fraud, or certain drug offences.
If they test positive, they are required to attend an assessment session with one of the drugs treatment services the force works with in Essex.
This is one of the ways in which the force tries to help people with addictions to break away from a cycle of reoffending and turn their lives around.
