Work on guard camp is commenced
Permanent construction work on the National Guard encampment is to be started at once, following the awarding of a contract this morning to M.M. Sundt, local contractor, who submitted the lowest of three bids received by the board of reviewing officers who were present in the city for that specific purpose.
The contract calls for the early completion of the building, which include a combination mess hall and kitchen, four latrines and a number of tent floors. The total allotment of money for the purpose under a war department appropriation is $19,150. Work was commenced on the contract this afternoon by Contractor Sundt.
The buildings will be of permanent type, each building being of brick and concrete construction. It is hoped that subsequent annual appropriations will allot sufficient money to the encampment to permit of building additional structures as needed.

Las Vegas is center of greatest network of highways in New Mexico
San Miguel county will carry a larger total levy for special road bills passed by the last legislature than any other county but the aggregate of eight mandatory levies is less by one half mill than was reported recently in a press statement by the Taxpayers’ association. The total of levies ranging from one mill down to one tenth mill for roads and a bridge will be two and seven eighths mills.
Of the eight bills passed affecting taxpayers in this county, objections are raised to but three and only in one instance is there general protest against the action taken by the legislature.
The Sheep Camp Road
This criticism centers upon House Bill No. 24 which establishes a state highway from White Lakes in Santa Fe county to El Pueblo in San Miguel county. This was a pet road measure fostered by Jose Ortiz y Pino, representative from Santa Fe county who operates several flocks of sheep in the southwestern part of San Miguel county and is eager for easy access from his headquarters at Gallisteo to his range in this county. The bill imposes one quarter mill by mandatory levy upon San Miguel county and only one-eighth upon Mr. Ortiz’s own county. This special road bill is one of a series of such measures which the Santa Fe representative has succeeded in getting passed by the last two legislatures.

Vegas girl scouts end week’s Gallinas trip
Las Vegas girl scouts and their counselors, under the direction of Mrs. Earl Hilton, completed their week’s camp yesterday.
After hiking and cooking out every day, the climax of the week’s program for the older girls came with the climb to the top of Hermit Peak. On Friday 24 girls and 6 counsellors made the trip to the top viewing the spring and Hermit’s cave. No one received any bruises or scratches on the trip, according to Mrs. Hilton. The girls carried light lunches.
On Thursday evening District Ranger Leonard Prichard and John Brinkley of the Gallinas Ranger Station showed the girls outdoor movies and a film on how little careless ways cause fire in the forest. Ranger Prichard told the girls the story of the Hermit.
