In 2020, amid the height of the coronavirus pandemic and significant financial woes, JCPenney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The pandemic was the final straw after declining sales for several years and debt of over $4 billion.

During the proceedings, JCPenney shuttered more than 200 underperforming stores, and the location at Beaver Valley Mall in Monaca, Pennsylvania, about 31 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, was on the list.

Although it began the closing process, it was ultimately saved, according to ABC affiliate WTAE.

NOT AGAIN

Now, shoppers are hoping for another last-minute save as the JCPenney location is slated to close again this fall due to lease term issues.

"The JCPenney store at Beaver Valley Mall in Monaca, PA, will close its doors in fall 2025," a spokesperson for the retailer told the outlet.

"Regretfully, we are unable to continue our current lease terms for this store location and have been unable to find another suitable location in the market."

"We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our Monaca, PA, location through the years, and we hope to continue serving them throughout our nearly 650 stores nationwide at JCPenney.com," the spokesperson added.

Liquidation sales have begun with discounts starting at 20%, according to a Facebook post from the Beaver Valley Mall.

Fortunately for consumers, there are still six other JCPenney stores in malls throughout the west side of Pennsylvania.

They are located in Indiana (the city), Monroeville, Robinson, Ross Park, Westmoreland, and Uniontown.

JCPenney has already shuttered at least seven stores nationwide this year as of last month.

They were in California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and West Virginia.

Despite its merger with SPARC Group to create Catalyst Brands in January, JCPenney said at the time that the closures were "unrelated to the recent Catalyst Brands merger," per Today.

As part of the deal, JCPenney, Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, and Lucky Brand, are all under the Catalyst Brands umbrella.

JCPenney Stores Closed 2025

JCPenney shuttered seven stores by May 25.

  • San Bruno, CA – The Shops at Tanforan
  • Denver, CO – The Shops at Northfield
  • Pocatello, ID – Pine Ridge Mall
  • Topeka, KS – West Ridge Mall
  • Newington, NH – Fox Run Mall
  • Asheville, NC – Asheville Mall
  • Charleston, WV – Charleston Town Center

JCPenney also assured shoppers that there are no mass closure plans going forward.

"While we do not have plans to significantly reduce our store count, isolated closures in specific markets do happen from time to time due to expiring lease agreements, market changes, or other factors," a statement to Today read.

MACY'S MOVES

Other department stores like Macy's have also been making significant adjustments to store footprints in 2025.

At least 66 locations for the company have shuttered already this spring as part of its Bold New Chapter Plan.

There's a goal of 150 shutdowns by 2026.

This also comes as Macy's readjusts its vision for smaller-format department stores and remodels locations that are remaining operational.

It's also in the process of opening 15 new Bloomingdale's locations and 30 new Bluemercury stores in the next three years.

Macy's CEO Tony Spring also issued a blunt four-word warning to shoppers recently about the closures.

Spring also noted there would be a major overhaul to the company's product offerings.
