‘Contaminated’ snack recalled over risk of ‘life-threatening’ ingredient hidden inside – shoppers must return item

A POPULAR snack has been pulled from shelves over fears of a life-threatening ingredient hidden inside.

Shoppers have been warned to check their cupboards and return the item to stores immediately.

The product could contain an "undeclared" ingredient, according to officials.

This means the ingredient was not listed on the product packaging, which could pose a serious health risk to some consumers.

Firehook Artisan Classic Sea Salt Organic Crackers are the subject of the recall.

An undisclosed number of packages of the crackers were sold across the East Coast.

This includes retail stores in 11 states.

The states affected include Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia.

The company, Firehook of Virginia, initiated the urgent recall after it discovered undeclared sesame in the product. 

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sesame run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products," the US Food & Drug Administration stated in a news release.

Sesame is recognized as one of the top nine food allergens in the US.

Approximately 1 million Americans suffer from a sesame allergy.

A "temporary breakdown" in production and "packaging processes" led to the wrong labels being placed on the products, per the FDA.

What to Do: Consumers should return the recalled crackers to the place of purchase for a full refund

The company's packaging processes were cited as faulty.

While the FDA report did not name specific stores, Firehook’s website has offered some clues.

The company's products are sold at major retailers like Costco, Whole Foods, and Stop & Shop.

They are also available on Amazon and other outlets.

The product is Artisan Classic Sea Salt Crackers. The size of the package is 8 ounces.

The crackers come in a clear package with a UPC Code of 8 99055 00063 5.

Shoppers should look out for packages with a Best-By Date of 09/29/25.

Firehook of Virginia started the recall on May 30.

The FDA publicly announced the information on June 4. 

The recall came after "it was discovered that the sesame-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of sesame," per the FDA warning.

There have been no confirmed illnesses linked to the product so far.

A representative for Firehook Artisan Baked Crackers did not immediately respond to request for comment.
