Another 83 California Rite Aid Stores Set To Close

CALIFORNIA — Rite Aid is continuing to close stores across California as part of the retail pharmacy chain’s bankruptcy process. Court documents filed last week reveal another 83 Golden State stores are targeted for permanent closure.

Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023 and again in May 2025. The second bankruptcy filing reveals that Rite Aid is liquidating most of its assets in a fire sale.

In total, 179 Rite Aid stores in California are planned to close, leaving just 68 stores remaining in the Golden State.

Nationwide, Rite Aid has targeted about half of its 1,240 stores for closure.

The Pennsylvania-based company entered the latest bankruptcy with over $2 billion in debt, and it warned employees last month about potential job cuts.

Rite Aid stated that customers can continue to access pharmacy services and products in-store and online, including prescriptions and immunizations. In connection with the sale process and court-supervised proceedings, the company said it is working to facilitate a smooth transfer of customer prescriptions to other pharmacies.

Rite Aid Rewards points are no longer being issued, and existing points and bonus cash will also expire per the terms and conditions. They will also no longer honor gift cards or accept any returns or exchanges beginning June 5.
