Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has announced plans to increase its basic rate of pay by £1.20 an hour to £9.20, and £9.80 in London.

That puts it above both the Government set national living wage of £7.50 an hour for people over 25 and the voluntary “real” figure of £8.75, but just below the £10.20 figure for the capital.

But what is the basic rate of pay at the rest of the UK’s top supermarkets?

We contacted all of the country’s top supermarket chains to find out what their basic hourly rate of pay is for staff inside and outside London.

Until this week Aldi held the title for the UK’s highest-paying supermarket. However Sainsbury’s have put it under threat, outside of London at least.

The full list is as follows:

• Sainsbury’s - £9.20 per hour and £9.80 in London.

• Aldi - £8.85 and £10.20 in London.

• Lidl - £8.75 and £10.20 ‘within the M25’

• Morrison’s - £8.70 and £9.45 in London

• Waitrose - £8.70 +

• Asda - £8.67 and £9.74 in London

• M&S - £8.50 and £9.65 in London
