A man who was recently found hiding in a grocery store ceiling has now been accused of robbing a Salem convenience store using a hypodermic needle as a weapon, police said.
Eric Lombari, 30, is charged with one count of robbery. Police said Lombari entered the Main Street store shortly after 8 p.m. July 20 and demanded money while holding a syringe filled with what looked like red liquid.
"He was displaying a hypodermic needle and showed it to the clerk," Capt. Joel Dolan said. "Obviously, the clerk was in fear of his safety and cooperated with him."
Police said the robber got away with $300 and some cigarettes. Investigators said they used store surveillance and security cameras from surrounding businesses, as well as information from other police departments, to identify Lombari as the suspect.
"Once we got a name, we were able to positively identify him as the suspect in the case," Dolan said. "Detectives were able to take out a warrant last week, and we tracked the suspect down to Lawrence, Massachusetts, where Lawrence police picked him up."
Lombari also faces three charges that include trespassing after allegedly falling through the ceiling of a Dover supermarket while trying to evade police, officials said.
Salem police said using a needle as a weapon is becoming more common.
"It's not that strange for a hypodermic needle to be used," Dolan said. "There's a whole host of issues that could be hygiene, infectious diseases, just what could be contained in the needles. It's a pretty serious weapon to be used."
Police said Lombari also has outstanding warrants in Derry and Strafford County.
