The minors were gathered outside the Popeyes when two shooters approached the group and fired multiple rounds, Baltimore Police Chief Michael S. Harrison said.

Harrison said the shooters immediately fled the scene after the shooting.

Baltimore police said the victims included a 16-year-old, two 17-year-olds, and two 18-year-olds, all males.

The 16-year-old, identified by family members as Deonta Dorsey, died at the hospital.

The four victims are expected to survive after suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

The juveniles were students at Edmondson-Westside High School, located across the street from the shooting.

"Again, we have a very tragic incident. Five people shot, one who has now lost his life over foolishness and nonsense and this did not have to happen," Harrison said.

The police chief believes the students were on their lunch break at the time.

A motive behind the shooting has yet to be determined.

Police said it's not believed the shooting is connected to the school.

"I would say good afternoon, but there's nothing good about an afternoon where another young life in our city is lost over nothing, over nonsense, over stupidity," Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said.

Cops said they are seeking any footage and information from the public.

"Every single, solitary detail matters. The why, the how, where the gun came from," Mayor Scott added.

"We probably know this gun came from some state not named Maryland.

"How it got into the hands of young people, why young men in Baltimore and in this country feel like they have to have a gun to make things right."

The school released a statement: "We are saddened to share that five students at Edmondson-Westside High School were injured during a shooting at a nearby shopping center.

"Tragically, one of the students died as a result. Our thoughts are with the families of those students and the Edmondson-Westside community during this difficult time."

The school canceled classes on Thursday.
