Statement from Mayor Andrea Horwath on Water Safety During Labour Disruption

There have been troubling claims circulating about the safety of Hamilton’s drinking water. I understand how concerning this is — clean, safe water is not just a service, it’s essential to our daily lives.

The fact is: Hamilton’s water is safe.

Despite the current labour disruption, the City’s water and wastewater systems are operating under robust emergency protocols. Certified professionals are on site, safety standards are being met, and regulatory monitoring continues without interruption.

Spreading false information about our water quality is not only irresponsible - it creates unnecessary fear and undermines trust in the public services we all rely on.

Hamilton has made significant, ongoing investments to ensure our water infrastructure is modern, resilient, and safe. In the last three years alone, the city has invested over $856 million in capital upgrades to our water, wastewater, and stormwater systems; including treatment plants, pumping stations, and distribution networks. These investments are part of our commitment to protecting public health and the environment for generations to come.

As Mayor, I remain committed to achieving a fair resolution with the Hamilton Ontario Water Employees Association (HOWEA). I believe deeply in organized labour and in our workers. Our whole city does. Hamilton has a proud tradition of respecting the rights of working people, and I continue to support the collective bargaining process.

Negotiations are underpinned by facts that we cannot change. The City of Hamilton must meet its obligations to workers while also ensuring fiscal responsibility to all Hamiltonians — now and into the future.

I encourage both parties to stay at the table and work toward a fair and mutually beneficial resolution that restores full service as quickly as possible. In the meantime, I know Hamiltonians will continue to show resilience and understanding as we navigate this together.

Hamiltonians can feel confident turning on the tap. Your water is safe, and your city is here for you.

- Mayor Andrea Horwath
